Do you have to be able to read music notes To Play The Guitar?

Im going to be getting a guitar soon and i use to be able to read music notes when i was younger like 12 or 11 im 15 now and i dont know how to read them anymore so do i need to know how to read music notes to Play Guitar?

Tablature (tabs for short) is an easy alternative to learning how to read music. To read tabs, there are a few things you need to know:
1) The lines on the paper represent the strings. The highest string on the paper (closest to the ceiling) is the thinnest string on the guitar.
2) The numbers represent what fret to play. The frets are the metal pieces on the neck of the guitar. When playing a fret, put your finger right behind the fret, rather than on top of it. You’ll get a better sound this way.
3) Read from left to right. If there are notes that are stacked together to make a vertical column, these notes are a chord and they are played simultaneously.

Tab is a good way to get into guitar. In fact, lute music (the great-grandfather of the guitar) was written in tab. Tablature has some significant drawbacks that make it insufficient for advanced musicians, songwriters, and guitarists, but you can learn how to read notes, called “standard notation”, as you progress on the instrument.

Play On $14.39 Scott McCarl may have only appeared on a single Raspberries release (their 1974 swan song, Starting Over), but the bassist was a very talented singer/songwriter — one of the reasons why Eric Carmen and company enlisted him in the first place. So why it took McCarl so bloody long to issue a solo album in the wake of the Raspberries’ 1975 split-up was a bit puzzling to fans. Titled after his best-known Raspberries composition, Play On surfaced in 1998, and showed that despite the long layoff, McCarl’s gift for Beatlesque vocals and power pop had not dulled in the slightest. Standouts include such melodic originals as “I’ll Be on My Way,” “In Love Without a Girl,” and “Run for the Sun,” as well as a pair of covers — “Yes It Is” by the Beatles and “Nobody Knows” by his old pals, the Raspberries. In Play $14.38 With Appalachian tunes, there’s something about the combination of a fiddle and a clawhammer banjo that just sounds perfect somehow. And when it comes to Irish tunes, there’s something similarly perfect about the combination of a fiddle and an expertly played, open-tuned guitar. It may not be a strictly traditional instrumentation — technically, Irish tunes are usually meant to be played unaccompanied or in unison by whichever melody instruments happen to be in people’s hands down the pub — but it sure does sound great. Liz Carroll has emerged as one of America’s most accomplished and beloved Celtic fiddlers over the last decade, and no rhythm guitarist is more highly regarded than John Doyle, a co-founder of Solas and frequent sideman for many of the most prominent names in Irish and American acoustic music. On this album the two work their way energetically through a nice collection of jigs, reels, airs and hornpipes both traditional and original (Carroll being well-known also for the quality of her tune writing). One of the most interesting elements of Doyle’s and Carroll’s playing is their tendency to play reels with a joyful swing, while toning down that rhythmic characteristic in their hornpipes, making it sometimes difficult to tell the two types of tune apart — on “Ronan’s Boys” and “Ralph’s 2-3-5″ there’s an especially lovely and pronounced lilt to the playing, while “The Man with One Kidney” and “The Spy Czar” swing more gently but no less infectiously. Doyle’s guitar playing is especially subtle and elegant on the jig set “Northern Jig”/”The Box Man”. Even when they slow down for the beautiful slow air “The Island of Woods”, there’s a spunky energy to their playing that makes the tune almost danceable. Overall, this is a wonderful program that will appeal to any fan of Irish music. Then Play On $7.18 This Peter Green-led edition of the Mac isn’t just an important transition between their initial blues-based incarnation and the mega-pop band they became, it’s also their most vital, exciting version. The addition of Danny Kirwan as second guitarist and songwriter foreshadows not only the soft-rock terrain of “Bare Trees” and “Kiln House” with Christine Perfect-McVie, but also predicts Rumours. That only pertains to roughly half of the also excellent material here, though; the rest is quintessential Green. The immortal “Oh Well,” with its hard-edged, thickly layered guitars and chamber-like sections, is perhaps the band’s most enduring progressive composition. “Rattlesnake Shake” is another familiar number, a down-and-dirty, even-paced funk, with clean, wall-of-sound guitars. Choogling drums and Green’s fiery improvisations power “Searching for Madge,” perhaps Mac’s most inspired work save “Green Manalishi,” and leads into an unlikely symphonic interlude and the similar, lighter boogie “Fighting for Madge.” A hot Afro-Cuban rhythm with beautiful guitars from Kirwan and Green on “Coming Your Way” not only defines the Mac’s sound, but the rock aesthetic of the day. Of the songs with Kirwan’s stamp on them, “Closing My Eyes” is a mysterious waltz love song; haunting guitars approach surf music on the instrumental “My Dream”; while “Although the Sun Is Shining” is the ultimate pre-Rumours number someone should revisit. Blues roots still crop up on the spatial, loose, Hendrix-tinged “Underway,” the folky blues tale of a lesbian affair on “Like Crying,” and the final outcry of the ever-poignant “Show Biz Blues,” with Green moaning “do you really give a damn for me?” Then Play On is a reminder of how pervasive and powerful Green’s influence was on Mac’s originality and individual stance beyond his involvement. Still highly recommended and a must-buy after all these years, it remains their magnum opus. ~ Michael G. Play On… $14.38 The late and very great Johnny Cunningham may no longer be a part of Celtic Fiddle Festival, but his spirit hovers directly over this album, recorded live in the U.S. At least for this disc, he’s been replaced by La Bottine Souriante’s André Brunet, who fits in easily with the lineup. As ever, the CD is an eclectic mix of tunes, beautifully and boldly played, with Brunet injecting a strong dose of the Quebecois into the Irish and Breton music, which roves far afield this time around. Ged Foley does a wonderful solo guitar job on a set of tunes that let him out of his supporting role for a few minutes. But it’s the fiddles that are, quite rightly, the stars of the show, with Kevin Burke and Christian Lemaitre bringing experience to the party. Every track is a delight, and Cunningham is remembered specifically on his “Leaving Brittany.” There’s the inevitable nod to O’Carolan, but mostly the players dig below the surface for the material and present it in glittering, joyful fashion.
