Guitar Lessons for Children – What Age Should Your Child Begin?
You want your child to be musically inclined and then decided to enrol him or her in guitar lessons. With the guitar in his arms – he looked like a mini-rock star and you can just vividly see him all grown up and on that stage playing in front of a cheering crowd. Hold that thought! He or she is not yet in school – is it possible that your child can begin learning guitar despite a young age?
There is really no exact age on when to start strumming the guitar. It is believed that younger learn more quickly and effectively compared to the older ones. According to a study, 80% of your child’s intellectual skill is obtained during the first six years of his life. This is the reason why it is so easy for children to recall whatever skills or language that you feed them.
Two things you need to ask yourself before you even find a guitar instructor for your little one are: does he want to take guitar lessons? Is he interested in playing the guitar? Bear in mind that although you are paying for the lessons, it is your child who is enrolling, and not you. So before you sign him up, you need to know his attitude towards the instrument or even music itself. Forcing your child to do something he doesn’t like would be a waste of time and money. You can always buy him a toy guitar and see if he likes playing with it.
When you see that your child has a potential to be a guitar-player and loves what he does, you may enrol him to guitar lessons for children. Find an instructor that your child is at ease with. He needs to learn without any pressure coming from anyone – especially the one who is teaching him. Let his learning be fun and exciting for him so that he’ll learn faster.
One more thing is that when your child will start in a younger age, they would hardly get into trouble. No broken bones, abrasions, open wounds and a sworn enemy. He wouldn’t have the time to do so because he has a more interesting thing to do with his time – like playing the guitar!
The moment he starts his guitar lessons, purchase a guitar for him. Although you have yours at home, it will probably be too big for him. Let your child accompany you to the store to see which size of guitar suits him. He will likely be more attached to the instrument if he is the one who chose it for himself.
And when your child already has a few guitar lessons – he could play a song for you. Do not criticize him, you might traumatize your child, instead encourage him as he plays, no matter how novice he sounds like. Allow him to practice at his own regular pace. Get your guitar and play together – make music a bonding activity between parent and child.
Guitar lessons for children will greatly benefit your kids. Not only that it helps them widen their horizon and express themselves – it is a skill that can work alone or with other people. They can gain friends and confidence while having a great time!
